"She kicks when surprised, cornered or touched on the back end"

Dear Keith...

Tuesday, April 3, 2007

We have a mustang mare that was rescued severly under noursihed and probably abused with a rope. We have taken 5 months after she foaled and weaned a colt to gentle her. She was scared to death especially of men but now comes and eats out of our hands. We have for several weeks been working on catching and leading and now she leads well. We can brush all but her flanks and rear. She kicks when surprised, cornered or touched on the back end. I have always used a rope on the back to get them to stop kicking but she is so afraid of one I do not know where to go from here. Lunges at 4 gates by just pointing and sending. Will come, bend and stand but do not know what to do about kicking and the back end. Any suggestiions would be greatly appreciated. Mike O

Every time you teach an exercise, your horse will go through the same learning cycle. He'll go from "Bad" to "Good" to "Worse" to "Not So Bad" to "Learned." That's the typical cycle: Bad. Good. Worse. Not so bad. Learned.
