"Where do I begin?"

Dear Keith...

Thursday, December 29, 2005

I bought a mare and did not know she was in foal, along came Murphy. Murphy now 3 1/2 year old gelding, need to train past halter, leading, where do I begin? I am not, and do not pretend to be a trainer of any caliber, just love my horses and want to do right by them. thanks paula

Suggested Article: "Teach Neck Reining and more with the Clockwork Exercise"
This is called "The Clockwork Exercise" because you need to imagine four very large clocks, one underneath each of your horse's feet. When your horse moves any leg directly forward that leg is "stepping on twelve o'clock." When any leg moves...

Suggested Article: "Back Easily With Hip Shoulder Shoulder"
When you first begin backing, back your horse at an angle (or "crooked"). Don't ask him to back up straight because you'd be pulling evenly on both of the horse's shoulders; he'll be resisting and you'll lose "lightness." He'll push into your...

Suggested Article: "Three Step Stop Exercise"
"When you've mastered this exercise, the cool "upshot" is that if you're riding your horse, and his body is in the wrong position to pick up his lead, for instance, (maybe he's all "splayed out") then you can simply pick up the reins and drive him...
