"She bucks, kicks, rears, and will occasionally bite"

Dear Keith...

Hello,
My name is Mariah. A few months ago I received a three year-old quarab filly named Ellie. She's only halter broken and has quite a few behavior problems. She bucks, kicks, rears, and will occasionally bite. She kinda picks up her front feet but I'm rather nervous about working around her hind quarters. Some people call her stupid and all that but I know she's just being a horse that isn't confident in her handler. Her herd-mate is my two-and-a-half year old quarter horse cross named Rusty. He is very mellow and is advancing beautifully under saddle though he won't canter and I'm not sure why. Ellie is very reactive when you ask her to move out on the long line. She often pulls and bolts and bucks straight at me. She's also been head shy since I've received her. She also reacts violently when I tap her hind quarters with the whip asking her to step over. She can be very intimidating. Though I don't want to be I am afraid to work with my horse. I don't have much money, even to send her to a trainer, but I do my best with what I have. I love my horse and I will not sell her but I do have to admit that I need help.
Thank you so much for your time. |
