"The mare's attitude has changed from good to not good"

Dear Keith...

Friday, May 25, 2007

A nicely trained mare, under a new owner two years ago, has started avoiding the bit, a snaffle. The rider rides with loose reins then when asking to turn or slow the horse sticks it's nose out. What I am seeing happening here is that because of the loose reins, the rider consequently bumps the mare's mouth when asking for a turn, and the horse is trying to avoid this. Should the rider be riding with a steady rein contact with a small give and take? The mare's attitude has changed from good to not good. Your assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated. Joan M
