"He gets nervous when he feels insecure and he's gotten out of hand by fighting me and blowing up"

Dear Keith...

Saturday, October 20, 2007

Dear Mr. Hosman, I am an experienced horseback rider having trouble with one of my horses. I've had him since he was born, an Arabian/Friesian cross. He's a 10 year old gelding and has a great temperament in most things. My problem is when we're riding, he gets nervous when he feels insecure and many times over the last several years he's gotten out of hand by fighting me and blowing up. I've gotten to the point where I get nervous the instant I feel him get tense. I know I'm not sitting correctly, which leads to his tension and I've been trying hard to sit and ride correctly. Then I get nervous before I can stop it and sit forward, causing him to feel my tension and also get tense. I still get nervous on the trail and can't always do the things I need to do to keep him calm and focused. I will turn him in circles, or figure eights, or one rein stop and spin him around, all things that help. I just can't seem to overcome my nervousness and anxiety when I ride him. When we're both calm and confident, we're a great team. And there are times when we ride and he's perfect. How can I overcome the nervousness I feel, even when I do the right things? I was hoping you offer lessons and/or have a clinic scheduled for the near future. I live in San Antonio, so I'm not far from you. I'm hoping you can help me with this. Please reply to this and let me know what you might be able to do. Many thanks Katie Anderson
